Fast Car Finance’s Top Motorsport Moments

With all the major sporting events pretty much cancelled this year, it’s an incredible blow to all motorsport lovers out there. We can’t bring these events back, but we thought you might enjoy a run down of some of the best motorsport moments from the best of British motor racing.

Best British Grand Prix Moments

We don’t want to over-dramatize, but we are pretty sure that the first British Grand Prix after the break due to the Coronavirus will be pretty epic. Much like the first post-WWII Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1948. First and second place were taken by Italian racers Luigi Villoresi and Alberto Ascari who were both in Maserati 4CLTs. British racer, Bob Gerard took third place in an ERA.

Silverstone has changed beyond all recognition from 1948 when it was little more than an airfield. It’s now the home of British Motor Racing and we can’t wait to see events taking place there again! Check the official Silverstone website to see the latest details about the event and whether it’s likely to take place in some capacity at the end of July.

Fast Car Finance founder, Andy Wise is a huge fan of Senna who inspired his love of motor racing as he grew up. We can’t share the photo on our site because of licensing, but we love seeing this most unusual lift during the 1991 British Grand Prix. Mansell was racing for Williams FW14-Renault and in 1st position and Senna racing for McLaren MP4/6-Honda was in 4th position.  That’s the stuff that legends are made of!

Fast Car Finance New Business Manager Carol Westlake went to her first British Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1992, the year Nigel Mansell won the World Championship. Carol and her dad managed to get a spot on the banks along with thousands of others and loved the electric atmosphere as Mansell won the race and recorded the fastest lap. Carol remembers crowds pouring on to the track after his win, even though some cars were still racing!

Looking Hopeful for a Delayed Goodwood Festival of Speed

No other racing event brings together something for every car lover, including vintage, classic cars on the lawn, track events, F1, supercars and even rally cars and cars from the 90’s. There will be many disappointed car-lovers if Goodwood Festival of Speed doesn’t go ahead, but luckily, there’s plans for it to be rescheduled to later in 2020. Check out the Goodwood Festival of Speed website for more details.

In the meantime, the Goodwood Road & Racing team has pulled together some live streams that you might want to look at if you’re a member. There’s a YouTube clip on this page with the highlights from the Members Favourite Moments.

Fingers Crossed for Le Mans in September

When details of the coronavirus hit, Le Mans race organiser the Automobile Club de l’Ouest announced, in conjunction with the Féderation Internationale Automobile (FIA) and the World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC), that they would reschedule the 24 Hours of Le Mans to 19 – 20 September. At the moment, it’s hard to say whether it will still take place or not, but let’s hope it will in some form or other!

If you want a rundown of some great Le Mans moments (and a look back at how the race has developed through the years), this article from GQ gives you all of that. And let us end on the classic line:

“When you’re racing, it’s life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.”

(If you know. You know. And if you don’t know, then this is the iconic line from Steve McQueen who played Porsche driver Michael Delaney in the film ‘Le Mans’ in 1971).

Have you got a favourite memory from the British Grand Prix, Goodwood Festival of Speed or Le Mans? We’d love to know!
