How to buy a classic car from a social distance

As many motor dealerships are preparing to reopen their forced closure due to the COVID 19 pandemic, we thought we’d share some of the best practice we’ve seen and the guidance from the professional bodies for the motor industry.

The best-practice guidance has been developed in association with dealers and manufacturers and provides more detailed information that car dealerships can implement following the government’s top-level briefing on Sunday 10 May 2020.  The NDFA guidance covers:

  • Communication and educating customers and staff
  • Social distancing
  • Sanitisation and hygiene
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Using digital and other virtual methods

A reputable dealership will be making the necessary adaptations to their showroom to keep their customers safe, so we’d advise you to take a look at the guidance so that you can keep yourself safe before heading out to look at any cars. The dealership is not permitted to do any accompanied test drives, which is clearly stated in the guidance.

One of our partner dealerships, Kent High Performance Cars, has been very busy throughout the lockdown period and we have secured Ferrari finance for a number of their clients over the last few weeks. They’ve been doing virtual tours of the cars in the showroom and demonstrations of the cars via video and it seems that for Ferrari enthusiasts, this is a brilliant way to buy a car.

Interestingly, Fast Car Finance has seen an influx of new enquiries from our customers who are looking to invest in a luxury car or super-car. Many of our clients will know that this is a great time to invest in a classic car and during April and May, we have financed a £70k Ferrari 430 Spider, a Ferrari 355 Berlinetta and just approved the finance for a stunning 1969 Mercedes Benz 280 SL.

Fast Car Finance managing director, Andy Wise says: “Despite the increase in finance deals that we’ve seen, it’s absolutely critical for the wider-economy that the motor industry gets moving again, so we welcome the news from the NFDA and the SSMT that the retail motor industry is set to re-open.  Initially, the motor industry was booming at the start of 2020, however the lockdown restrictions, whilst sensible, have created issues in the automotive sector and I hope that people will have the confidence to purchase the cars that they were planning to at the start of the year. We need people to invest in motoring as it’s a huge part of the UK economy. If people don’t buy cars, the car manufacturers will slow down their production, which means lots of job losses and a huge impact all the way down the supply chain.”

If you don’t feel confident enough to make an appointment at a classic car dealership, then why not check out some of these amazing cars at the RM Sotheby’s European Sale, which was originally scheduled as a live auction in Essen, Germany at the end of March. Bidding is open online on 3 June and closes on 11 June. You can take a look at some amazing cars including:

And if you’re a fan of the Fast and Furious franchise, then the Indianapolis Online Auction is offering Paul Walker’s 69 Classic Mustang between 10-18 July 2020.
